Irish Madrigals – cancelled

Date:

September 10, 2020

Location:

Galway, Ireland

I set the 17 beautiful Synge translations of Petrarch sonnets in 2003 as my Third Book of Madrigals and in 2004 made ensemble versions of them. Part of Synge’s intention was to translate love poetry into English but these translations also served as an exercise in writing prose poetry of the kind he could use in his last play “Deirdre of the Sorrows” which he wrote in parallel with the Petrarch translations. Both the play and the translations were incomplete at the time of his death in March 1909.

Our performance of 12 of these madrigals, along with a chamber version of Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet, forms part of the opening of the 2020 Galway Festival
