Other Minds

The Other Minds Festival was created by Charles Amirkhamian and has taken place in San Francisco each year since 1993 – this will be the 21st. Other Minds brings together a range of different composers and performers who spend a few days prior to the public events engaged in private conversations and encounters at the extraordinarily beautiful Djerrassi Ranch, a 600 acre property in the Santa Cruz mountains, which also hosts a Djerrassi Resident Artists Programme. Later in the week, the whole entourage moves to San Francisco where there are performances of their works. When I was there in 2001, for the 7th Other Minds, we performed the Adnan Songbook (and Etel has a home in Sausalito across the bay). Other poeple in that year included James Tenney, Alvin Curran and jazz pianist/composer Andrew Hill.

This time there will be, among others, Meredith Monk and Michael Gordon, and Nordic Voices will perform the following madrigals:

Book Two no. 8: I’vidi in terra

Book Two no. 4: Poi che voi

Book Two no. 10: Una candida cerva

Book Two no. 14: Morte à spento

Book Four no. 3: Chi è fermato di menar sua vita (World Premiere)

This last one is a new setting of a Petrarch sestina, dedicated to Charles’ centenarian father, which becomes the third madrigal in Book Four (these all set the 39-line sestina form rather than the 14-line sonnet that is used in Book Two).
