Conducting RSNO at Sonica
March 14, 2022

On March 12th I was to join forces with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for a spectacular performance at Cryptic’s Sonica Glasgow 2022. There were three works:  Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet, Arvo Pärt’s If Bach Had Been a Beekeeper and the UK premiere of my Viola Concerto (A Hut in Toyama) with Morgan Goff on viola. Morgan and I had given the world premiere of the concerto in June 2021 at Tasmania’s Dark Mofo Festival, which commissioned the work. I arrived in the evening of March 10, in time for the planned morning rehearsal on March 11. There is a rule that everyone has to take a test for covid each day before an orchestra rehearsal with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and so I took one just before I was to leave the hotel, but it turned out positive… Although I had had a minor cold for the previous week or two, I did not feel at all unwell, and it was no different from the kind of thing I might expect at this time of any year..

However, as I result I have had to isolate in a small hotel for several days and the RSNO provided a deputy conductor, Robert Baxter, who did a very good job. My performance was supposed to be one of the big events within Cryptic Theatre’s Sonica Festival, with live visual projections by Catalan artist Alba G Corral, but there was nothing that I could do about it. The event went ahead as planned, and Tramway was sold out with a packed audience. But I was hooked up to Zoom from my hotel room and did a live introduction with Cryptic’s director Cathie Boyd and conversations between the pieces with Cathy Graham (who I’ve know for many years – and we are both from East Yorkshire). Morgan played beautifully, and although there was a full house standing ovation at the end, I didn’t see it though I was able to hear the music, albeit through the speakers on my computer…

My isolation was not the same as the 14-day quarantine in Sydney prior to the Hobart premiere, where I’d known in advance, and had lots of books and work material. Here, I had just brought the scores that I needed for the performances, and though I did pack a couple of books to read on the train, that was it…
