Jesus’ Blood – Book of Hours Dundalk, Ireland
In Dundalk I directed a performance of Jesus’ Blood for Eamonn Quinn’s festival using those musicians who were already performing there. In addition, however, I also included about thirty young Irish schoolgirls from St Malachy’s Primary School who had just started music lessons: half sang, the others played strings. I rewrote their string parts so that they could be done just on open strings, or with the first finger. They all worked hard, helped by their teachers, and practised for some time before. I visited the school, going through the piece, and spent some time with them. They performed quite beautifully and their presence made the performance even more poignant.
