Having trained as a musician, Chris began his career with theatre sound rental company, Autograph Sound Recording, in 1981. Since 1987 he has worked as a freelance sound engineer and designer with composers, ensembles, dance, theatre and opera companies. In addition he has been involved with many large scale projects from corpora
te events to Pavarotti in the Park. He is head of sound for the annual Fés Festival of Sacred World Music in Morocco and works regularly for The Gavin Bryars Ensemble and The Hilliard Ensemble with Jan Garbarek. He has just completed design work for the Raymond Gubbay production of Madam Butterfly at the Royal Albert Hall and National Indoor Arena in Birmingham where new ‘sound imaging’ technology was successfully used to faithfully replicate the movement of performers through computer control of the sound system.
Chris first worked with Gavin in 1988 for the opening of Tate Gallery Liverpool where he assisted sound designer Bill Cadman with both the recording and live sound. Thereafter Chris took further work for Gavin due to the tragic loss of Bill at Lockerbie the same year and ever since has been responsible for all aspects of sound in Bryars’ work.
Some of Gavin Bryars’ works are site-specific and have led to many unique sound installations. These range from performances of The Sinking of the Titanic at the Art Tower Mito in Japan with the Balanescu Quartet, as part of a Christian Boltanski exhibition, to a disused water tower in Bourges, France, where the ensemble, performing in a damp subterranean level of the building were relayed to the audience on the ground level. In addition, having recorded Gavin Bryars’ music specially composed and performed at Le Chateau d’Oiron, Poitiers, France, Chris designed and installed an ambisonic (surround) sound system as part of a permanent exhibition in the gallery.
He has a six year old daughter Jessie and lives in London.
