A review of GB concert (plus that of Wim Mertens) at Kings Place in November 2010. The writer praises the quality of the musicians’ performances, but enters a caveat about occasional uncertainty of intonation with Gavin Bryars’ bass playing. What the reviewer could not have known was that, in the third of the three Irish Madrigals that John Potter sang, when Gavin turned the page there was no second page there at all! As a consequence he had to try a combination of memory, guesswork, ear test – all of which were only partially successful. Rehearsal for the concert had been tight because of Gavin being stuck on the motorway behind an accident, and celist Nick Cooper’s train being late. As a result the ensemble concentrated on the new works in the programme and didn’t rehearse these three pieces, which they had played several times before. So Gavin was not aware of the missing page – otherwise his intonation would have been perfect throughout…
