Gavin Bryars has a long association with Opera North Projects and its director Dominic Gray, starting with their work on Shakespeare’s sonnets, Nothing like the Sun in 2006, and continuing with Mercy and Grand, the music of Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan in 2008, Overworlds and Underworlds with the Brothers Quay in 2012, and others, up to Winestead for Hull City of Culture in 2017. He has performed in the Howard Assembly Room, with Blake Morrison, with Iarla O’Lionaird, a number times. A podcast on words and music with poet Simon Armitage was recorded earlier this year.
