Description:

Music for the ballet Trick Cell Play by Edouard Lock for the Sao Paolo Dance Company, Brazil

Date:

May 30, 2019

Gavin’s Notes:

As with all the work that I do with Edouard Lock, and we have made many ballets and dance works together, the music is based on existing historical musical compositions. In this case the music comprised reworking of operatic arts, chiefly from the 19th and early 20th century. And as always, the musical ensemble performs on the stage – this time the instrumentation was bass clarinet, piano, 2 celli and double bass. The individual pieces were:
After Barcarolle (Offenbach)
After Euridice (Gluck)
After Habanera (Bizet)
After Je Veux Vivre (Gounod)
After La Wally (Catalani)
After Lakmé (Delibes)
After Lascia Ch’io Pangia (Handel)
After O Mio Bambino Caro (Puccini)
After O Soave Fanciulla (Puccini)
After Un Bel Di Vedremo (Puccini)
After Nessun Dorma (Puccini)

Interestingly, with almost every composer whose works I have investigated and made new versions, I have developed a huge respect for them. This was certainly the case with Tchaikovsky )for the ballet Amjad), Grieg (for the ballet Peer Gynt with Gregor Zöllig in Bielefeld) and with most others.. But with Puccini this was not the case at all
